Saturday 7th April 2012.......
Travelling further west on the Eyre Highway on the South Australian side of the border you come to Border Village – a Roadhouse, Caravan Park and another golf hole on the Nullarbor Links Golf Course – 'Border Kangaroo'. A tricky Par 3 with dense vegetation on both sides of a very narrow fairway. We gave it our best!
We continued on through the Border Quarantine Checkpoint and onto Eucla, a short 10klms, where we played our 5th golf hole on the Nullarbor Links Golf Course - 'Nullarbor Nymph'. The hole we played here is played on the Eucla Golf Course itself........we had to drive 5klms off the Eyre Highway to the course along some very rough stony road but were excited that we were going to actually play on a 'real' Golf Course..........seeing is believing! We played our hole and then went back into Eucla to the roadhouse to have our cards stamped and I think I insulted the young girl who stamped our cards when I asked her if golf is really played at The Eucla Golf Course. She looked quizzically at me then said 'the grass hadn't been mowed for a while but they do occasionally have tournaments on the course'!
At Eucla we walked to the dune-smothered ruins of old Eucla Telegraph Station. The sand dunes are pristine white sand. I have posted a photo of beautiful Major Mitchell Cockatoos which guard this site – truly beautiful birds.
As we wanted to be in a good communication spot for our eldest granddaughter's 8th birthday tomorrow, Easter Sunday, we turned back and went back across the SA/WA Border to a coastal spot 10klms east from the border where we had 4-5 bands of service.
We made several phone calls, collected our emails and messages and I posted a couple of new blogs and talked to my friend Kathy on the phone while the sunset in the west over the coastal cliffs and the new moon rose in the east over the water............very spectacular.
Both Chris and my iPhones were together on the table and I was receiving Telstra from the Adelaide Time Zone and Chris was receiving his from the Perth Time Zone....so we were on different times.......unusual!
